Here are some Shogi variants. #More_Games Many of them should be playable with MOD64 pieces. Since the pieces move differently than chess pieces, I recommend changing the height of the pieces to remind you of the changes. For example, you can represent the silver general that moves one space diagonally or one space forward with a short bishop. You can think of the movement as: since the bishop is short, it can't move as far as a regular bishop. The mechanic where pieces can switch sides can be implemented by simply switching out the color of the scarf on each piece.

Cam is a relatively short abstract strategy game where you jump over your pieces and your opponent's pieces in order to reach your opponents castle before they reach your castle. It is similar to checkers, but you have a few more options with what moves you can make. #Quick_to_Learn #Abstract_Strategy #2_Player #Quick_to_Play Pieces Required: 67 tiles 14 piece bases 4 knight heads 10 pawn heads 8 white checker pieces 8 black checker pieces Initial Setup: The pieces face off with 3 rows of tiles between them. At the very ends of the board are the castle's that each player must defend. Rules: White starts. On each turn you can move one piece (knight or pawn) using one of the following moves: Plain Move - Move any piece one space in any direction (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally). The destination space must be unoccupied Cantor - Make one or multiple jumps over your own pieces. You may jump (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally over any adjacent piece of your color as long as their is room to land on the other side of the piece. The jumps do not have to all be in the same direction, but you may not end the Cantor where you started. Jump - Make one or multiple jumps over your opponents pieces. You may jump (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally over any adjacent piece of the opponents color as long as their is room to land on the other side of the piece. When you jump over an opponents piece, remove it from the game. The jumps do not have to all be in the same direction and you may end the jumps on the tile you started on. Knight's Charge (Knight's Only) - Use a knight to first make a cantor and then make one or more jumps. If at any time you are able to make a jump, you must do so. You may also substitute a Knight's Charge for a jump if you are able to take an enemy piece this way. If, at the end of a jump or a Knight's Charge the piece you moved can make another jump, then it must make this jump. If at the beginning of your turn you cannot make a jump, but you can make a Knight's Charge, you are not required to make the Knight's Charge. Ending the Game: You win if one of your pieces reaches your opponents castle. You can also win by capturing all of your opponents pieces. Learn more about Cam here

#more_games I found another website with lots of abstract strategy games that take place on grids, so many of them are playable with MOD64. Here is a link to the website. The website also allows you to play these games online. If anyone finds any nice games that work well with MOD64, it would be awesome if you could post it on this forum! Games that are potentially playable with MOD64: 9tka Akron Amazons - Try different board sizes and shapes, and different numbers of players Reversi and Anti-Reversi Arimaa Ataxx Bashni Breakthrough Cam Camelot Cannon Chain Lightning Clobber Connect 4 Connect 6 Crossway Dama Dameo Dipole Emergo English Checkers Epaminodas Fields of Action Flume Forms Fox and Hounds Freedom Go Gonnect Grand Chess Halma Hanniball Harzdame Hawalis Hnefatafl International Checkers Jeson Mor Jungle Cowrie Konane Lasca Lines of Action Ludo Mad Bishops Men Row Chess Metamorphosis Mind Ninja Momentum Monkey Queen Murus Gallicus Neutreeko Ordo Oust Oware Period 5 Phutball Pilare Quartetto Quax Regoot Rekushu Renju Rhode Rush Russian Checkers Shakti Shatranj Shintai Shogi Slimetrail Slither SnailTrail Speed Splut Stavropol Bashni Stavropol Checkers Stilts Suicide Bashni Suicide English Checkers Suicide Russian Checkers Surakarta Talpa Tama Tanbo Tavreli Teeko Three Musketeers Toguz Kumalak Traffic Lights Twixt Ultimate tic-tac-toe Vai Lung Thlan Veletas Virus Wars XiangQi Yugo Zurero Whew, that's a lot of games! #more_games Chess variants can be found at https://www.chessvariants.com/. Also look here to find chess variants that require fewer pieces to play. Many of these variants can be played with MOD64 provided you have enough pieces. It could also be a fun experiment to try playing a regular game of chess with a different shape of board or adding tile movement to the game. Post any fun games you discover on this forum!

Neutron is a simple two player game where players fight to get the neutron to their side of the board. #quick_to_play #easy_to_learn #2_player #abstract_strategy Pieces Required: 25 tiles 10 piece bases 11 pawn heads 6 black checker pieces 6 white checker pieces Initial Board Setup: Setup a 5x5 board with a row of pawns on each side. Place a neutron in the center. I suggest making the neutron by stacking a black checker piece on a white checker piece and putting a pawn head on top, but feel free to be creative. Movement: On your turn, you first move the neutron and then you move one of your pawns. The pawns and the neutron all move in the same way. They move horizontally, vertically, or diagonally until they hit another piece, or the edge of the board. White moves first, but on its first turn, it does not move the neutron, it only moves one of its pawns. Ending the Game: The game can end in two ways. If a player cannot move the neutron then they lose. Meanwhile, if the neutron is moved to one player's side of the board, then that player wins.

Push Fight is a quick, aggressive abstract strategy where your goal is to push one of the opponent's pieces off of the board. #quick_to_play #easy_to_learn #2_player #abstract_strategy Pieces Required: 26 light colored tiles 10 dark colored tiles 10 piece bases 4 pawn heads 3 rook heads 3 knight heads 5 black checker pieces 5 white checker pieces Initial Board Layout: Setup the tiles according to the diagram above. The light tiles are the playing surface for the pieces and the dark tiles are the walls. Additionally create 5 pieces of each color: 2 pawns and 3 rooks for black and 2 pawns and 3 knights for white. Setting up the Pieces: White starts by placing its 5 pieces anywhere on the right side of the board. Next black places its 5 pieces on the left side of the board. Movement: White makes the first move. On your turn you can move up to 2 pieces and then do a push. Moving a piece - To move a piece move it any number of tiles along vertically or horizontally adjacent spaces. You need not move in a straight line. Making a push - To make a push, choose one of your rooks or knights adjacent another piece and push that piece away and place your piece on that piece's old tile. You may push more than one piece as long as the last piece has room to move (or fall of the board). Remember that the dark tiles are walls, so piece may never end up on a dark tile. After a push, remove the head of the piece that made the push. The head stays off until another push is made. Headless piece may not be pushed, they are rooted to the spot they are on. Ending the Game: The game ends when a piece is pushed of the board. If your opponent's piece is pushed of the board then you win. Additionally, if a player cannot make a push on their turn, then they lose. Learn more about Push Fight here.

#more_games You can find more games to play with MOD64 pieces here. The website allows you to search games based on the pieces you have available. If anyone would like to transfer games from that website to this forum that would be very helpful! 😀

Pass your ball between your pieces and try and get it to the other side of the board before your opponent. #abstract_strategy #easy_to_learn #quick_to_play #2_player Pieces Required 10 piece bases 5 black checker pieces 5 white checker pieces 2 pawn heads Setup Setup a 7x8 board with 5 pieces of a color on either side. The central pieces on each side have a pawn head and the other 4 pieces are headless. Rules Move your pieces and pass the ball (pawn head) until you get your ball to the other side of the board. Movement On your turn you may either move a piece or pass the ball. To move a piece, choose a piece that does not have the ball and move it as the knight in chess: 2 spaces horizontally or vertically, then 1 space in a perpendicular direction. Jumping over pieces is allowed, but pieces may not be captured. To pass the ball, move it in a straight line horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to another one of your pieces. You may not pass the ball to a piece if one of the enemy pieces is blocking the path to that piece. You may pass the ball between multiple pieces on your turn. End of the Game The game ends when either player's ball reaches the opposite side. The player who's ball reaches the other side first wins.

Solitaire Chess is a single player, puzzle game where your goal is to remove all but one of the pieces from the board. #Quick_to_Play #Easy_to_Learn #Single_player Pieces Required: 16 Tiles 10 Piece Bases 10 Checker Pieces (single color suggested) Setup: Make a 4x4 board and setup the pieces according to one of the puzzles found here. Rules: Movement: Every move must be a capture. Moving onto a piece captures it and that piece is removed from the board. Moves are the same as in chess: Kings move one space in any direction and can never be captured. Bishops move diagonally any number of tiles. Rooks move vertically or horizontally any number of tiles. Knights move two spaces vertically or horizontally in one direction, then one space in a direction perpendicular to the first. Additionally, knights may jump over pieces. Pawns capture one space diagonally forward, where the forward direction is designated by the piece setup sheet. Ending the Game: When there are no more moves left, the game ends. If there is only one piece left then you win. If there are more pieces left, reset the board and try the puzzle again. Find video instructions here.

Four Circles is one of three games from the Modus set. The goal is to maneuver your pawns around until you get four headless pawns in a row. How do pawns get headless? Read the instructions to find out! #Quick_to_play #Abstract_Strategy #Easy_to_Learn #2_player Pieces Required: 20 Tiles 12 Piece Bases 6 White Checker Pieces 6 Black Checker Pieces 12 Pawn Heads Starting Layout: Start with a 4x5 board with 12 pawns that start off of the board. Rules: The game starts with players taking turns placing pawns on any vacant space on the board. Once placement is finished the game can begin. Movement: On your turn you have two options A pawn can be moved one space in any direction (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) A pawn can also jump over a piece in any direction (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally). However, after jumping, if the pawn had a head, remove it and if the pawn was headless, put the head pack on. Prior to moving you may remove a tile that does not have surrounding tiles on opposite sides (ie one above and one below or one to the left and another to the right). You may then move this tile anywhere. However, on your move you must move a piece onto the tile using one of the two moves above. Ending the Game: When someone gets four headless pawns in a row, that player wins. Learn more about Modus here.

Shobu is a game played on four boards. Your goal is to push all of your opponents pieces off of any one board. #Quick_to_play #Abstract_Strategy #Easy_to_Learn #2_Player Pieces Required: 64 Tiles 32 Piece Bases 16 White Checker Pieces 16 Black Checker Pieces 32 Heads of any kind (optional) Starting Layout: This layout shows 32 pawns, while the base set of MOD64 has only 16 pawn heads. If you do not have enough pawn heads use different piece heads or play with headless pieces. Rules: Movement: On your turn make two moves in this order: Make a passive move - Move any of your pieces on the two boards closest to you one or two space in any direction (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal), ending on an unoccupied space. Aggressive move - Choose a piece on a board of the opposite color to the board used in the passive move. Make the same move with this piece as you did in the passive move. If there is a piece of the opposite color in the way, then that piece is pushed to the next tile along the line of movement. If their is no tile available, then the piece gets pushed off of the board. You may only push one piece with this move, and you may not push one of your own pieces. Ending the Game: Once all pieces of a certain color are emptied off of a board, then the player playing the other color wins. Learn more about Shobu here.

Ard Ri is a Hnefatafl game played by the Vikings. The defenders try to get the king to escape the board while the attackers try to stop the king from escaping #Quick_to_play #Abstract_Strategy #Easy_to_Learn Pieces Required: 49 Tiles 13 Piece Bases 5 White Checker Pieces 78 Black Checker Pieces 1 King Head 12 Pawn Heads Starting Layout: The king and his defenders start in the middle of the board and the attackers start on four sides surrounding the king's group. Rules: Movement: Move any pawn or king any number of places along a row or column, the same as a rook in chess. If one or more of the opponents pieces get sandwiched between two of your pieces due to this move, then the sandwiched piece(s) are captured. Moving a piece between two of your opponents pieces does not result in that piece getting captured. Ending the Game: The attackers aim to capture the king; if the king is captured, then the attackers win the game. The defenders aim to get the king to safety at the edge of the board; if the defenders get the king to any tile on the edge of the board (shown with brown tiles), then the defenders win. Additionally, if a player cannot move or makes the same move three times in a row, then they lose the game. Learn more about Hnefatafl here.

Dobutsu Shogi is a simplified version of Shogi that is a great introduction to the game. #Quick_to_play #Abstract_Strategy #Easy_to_Learn #2_Player Pieces Required: 12 Tiles 8 Piece Bases 7 White Checker Pieces 7 Black Checker Pieces 2 King Heads 2 Rook Heads 2 Bishop Heads 2 Queen Heads Starting Layout: Rules: Movement: The pawn moves and captures one space forwards. Pawns that reach the final rank are promoted to queens. The rook moves and captures one space orthogonally it is recommended that you keep the rook short to remind you that it can only move one space. The bishop move and captures one space diagonally it is recommended that you also keep the bishop short to remind you that it can only move one space as well. The king can move one space in any direction. The queen can move one space in any direction except diagonally backwards. Again keep the queen short to be reminded of the different movement. You may switch out the checker piece in a captured unit so that it is now of your color. This is your piece now! You may then drop this piece on any tile on the board instead of moving. Captured queens get demoted back to pawns when this happens. Ending the Game: The object of the game is to either capture the enemy king or to move your king to the opposite side of the board. If the same position is reached three times in a row, then the game ends in a draw. Learn more about Dobutsu Shogi here.
